If only I understood years ago…

If I had known years ago what I know now, I would have taken the time to care for myself.
We all understand that we should eat better, rest more, exercise regularly, and stretch daily. But do we truly comprehend 'why'?
Back in 1983, a dear friend suggested that I lose weight. I felt insulted, my emotions stung, though I didn't let it show. I simply smiled in acknowledgment. I couldn't grasp the accuracy of his words.
In 1988, another friend told me that I needed to know when to "step away from the table." He also remarked, "I've never seen anyone consume the quantity of food that you do."
Almost twenty years later, in 2004, a doctor informed me that I was experiencing muscle atrophy. She referred me to physical therapy, where I completed several sessions to strengthen my muscles. I continued with the prescribed exercises until I felt better, but then I stopped. It was a mistake to quit; I should have maintained, persisted, and furthered my strength level.
As I reflect, I truly regretted not ceasing this knowledge in my earlier years. I humbly have come full circle with understanding and gratitude. I understand the importance of addressing muscle atrophy, maintaining body strength and cardio, and managing my weight.
If only I could turn back the hands of time…In 1988, I weighed 157 lbs. In 2023, I weigh 140 lbs. I prefer the fuller face that I had when I weighed 157 lbs, but I am so grateful for the decreased aging pains, improved strength, and agility at 140 lbs.
