High blood pressure has existed in my family over time. My grandfather had high blood pressure due to his diet and lack of exercise. My grandmother had high blood pressure as she aged and decreased her activity levels. My mother, at one point, had high blood pressure while she was receiving chemotherapy. The doctor suggested that she go on medication. My mother was quite averse to medication, so she refused, eliminated all foods that could be contributing to her increased blood pressure, and increased her physical activity, all while receiving chemotherapy. Her blood pressure did drop and returned to normal levels without medication. She was fortunate that her efforts did yield the result that she needed in a timely manner.
What I learned from my family is that I have to try my best to be mindful of the foods I eat, and I need to remain active. As I experiment with plant-based foods, I have noticed that I need to be mindful of the sodium levels in each serving. There are pros and cons to every decision and situation. When I eat plant-based foods, I am very conscious of the foods that I choose to cook together.
My goal is to live as healthy of a daily lifestyle as possible. We all have our unique struggles. Even though my blood pressure tends to run quite low when I go to the doctor, there are pros and cons to everything. When I needed surgery, my blood pressure dropped significantly, causing the procedure to take longer. After the surgery, I reflected and found it amazing how a good attribute could quickly turn dangerous given the right circumstances. And that's true with everything in life.
So, I have decided to do all I can to keep my blood pressure as low as I can. I do the following: Eat healthy foods with lots of green leafy foods, hydrate, exercise regularly, rest well, eat bananas, and read labels before purchasing any food. As for hydrating, one last interesting point, hydration does not necessarily lower blood pressure unless you are dehydrated.
Be mindful and take care of yourself!
